The same is true of L. Frank Baum -- He desperately wanted to break
free of Oz and write other fantasy stories.  He didn't kill anyone
off, but he tried to have Oz get cut off from the outside world so
that no new Oz adventures could reach the "Royal Historian".  But it
was no good -- The "little tyrants" (as he called them) insisted on
more Oz stories, so he had to re-establish contact with Oz via wireless
telegraph. ( There was no radio, TV, or Internet yet. :) )
