So I think Snape wants those unable to grasp potions to
drop out (is that an option by GoF? I don't remember),
because it's better to not do potions at all than do
them badly.

Perhaps, and he could be right. At the same time, it's
not very helpful to badger the students who are slow when
they're doing such dangerous things. Besides, what
becomes of students who drop out? Do they run around
half-educated like Hagrid? That's pretty dangerous, too.

Don'tquitehaveatheoryyet, but before "Mrs. Snape" is
rejected as an entirely implausible and ridiculous
notion, and consigned to the trashheap of discarded
ideas, answer me this: is there any evidence in the
canon that Snape is NOT married?
>>
At first, I could not wrap my head around this idea. It
just felt wrong. But then "Crying" popped up in Winamp
and I was inspired. "What would David Lynch do?" I asked
myself.
Give him an estranged wife, of course. David Lynch is a
bastard that way. And the more I thought about that, the
more right it seemed. If Snape has got any kind of wife,
she's estranged. The theory goes a little something like
this:
Snape became a Death Eater shortly after (or before)
graduating. That means he either had a DE wife or he
selfishly married a woman who was unaware of his, uh,
activities. I see Snape as a little too much of a loner
to enjoy doubles murder & mayhem, so the DE wife is out.
That leaves a nice, soul-soothing woman, much like you
described, to be gradually disillusioned. Maybe she has
an affair. Maybe she realizes that something about him is
too broken to be fixed by her love (obviously she hasn't
heard of fan fiction). Either way, they grow apart.
Thus, even when Snape finally renounces his evil ways,
she's not really there for him. By turning good again,
he's built a rickety rope bride across the chasm between
them, but she has to decide if she wants to rebuild their
bond. Snape must also decide if their love can overcome
their differences.
What do you think, sirs?
