I can't help going to _The Browning Version_ model and
speculate that Snape was a henpecked husband whose wife kept
nagging him because he was not as far up the hierarchy of
power in Voldemort's little club as she wanted.  Maybe she 
even left him in the end & married a more ambitious bloke
named Lestrange...
