You don't have be from a "lost French" background, or live in Canada, to
make such a mistake. When I picked up Sorceror's Stone this past October and
began to read, I got to the scene on the Hogwarts Express wherein Hermione
is introduced and I paused briefly and determined that her name must be
pronounced in the way the French would pronounce it: err-MYUHN
(sorta...phonetic french isn't my forte). This, based on two years of
highschool French, thirteen years ago. I then modified it to be Anglicised,
to Her-me-OWN. I went like that until Hermione herself corrected me, in
Goblet. Deep down, I still pronounce it a bit like Ron with a mouthful of
Yorkshire pudding: Her-MY-knee, dropping the all-but-swallowed "oh"
completely.
