Then Lupin gets a look at Scabbers:

"What's my rat got to do with anything?"
"That's not a rat," ........."by the name of Peter Pettigrew."

Now, how can anyone stop reading after suddenly learning that
Peter's alive, that Peter is a rat, that Peter has been hiding in
Ron's pocket for three books, that Black isn't evil, that Lupin
isn't evil, that Lupin is a werewolf, and that Black and Lupin are
friends, all in just 5 pages?

I must agree with 100& cindysphinx's comments on PoA and add that of all the canon (read and re-read countless times), for me personally the last few chapters of PoA are amongst the best things I have ever read.
I thought - first time through - that after they all came out of the Womping Willow it was * The End * but I realised I had so much still to read! Then JKR brings out the drama in the hospital wing, the time-turner and the rescue of the suddenly doomed Sirius and Buckbeak. You can only marvel!

The only thing that comes close for me is the chapter ending in GoF where Fudge (who I don't think is a DE but just in denial about the utterly terrifying news...) is determined to ignore Dumbledore's warnings so Dumbledore has to start organising everyone at speed and even gets Sirius and Snape to admit they are fighting on the same side. High drama and very understated tension.
