I've been giving some thought to the way Neville acts,
and it seems to me as if his horrible memory is a way
to cope with the way his parents are right now.
Obviously his father was a good wizard: he was an
Auror. I think that subconsciously he might think
that if he never becomes a good wizard, than he can't
be hurt like his parents were. When someone has been
hurt, they each react differently. For example, my
best friend and her sister were hurt by their father
for much of their lives. My best friend failed
everything so her father wouldn't pay attention to
her, while her sister excelled so she could get away
even faster. So maybe Neville's forgetfullness is
just his way of coping with his tragedy.
But that's only my opnion.
