I'm sure that's exactly what Ron and Hermione said. And I'm also sure 
that Hermione "knows exactly what the nature of Ron's feelings are for 
her." Put those together, and what have you got?

1. Hermione is a cruel insensitive girl who implies to  Ron that she 
would go to a ball with him, knowing perfectly well what his feelings 
are, when she wouldn't. 
2. Hermione does return some of the interest.

I've always thought #2 was a more sensible answer.
