Don't forget that Snape was probably a bit loopy at that point, 
having been zapped by a triple Expelliarmus and then involuntarily 
striking his head against the tunnel ceiling, complements of Sirius.  
He also might have watched the Dementors go after Harry for no good 
reason and feared they might go after him, too.
