We don't know that the Maurders were in Gryffindor.  They could have 
been in Slytherin.  I wonder if the association of Slytherin and bad 
wizzards in a more recent thing, espcially since Voldermort's rise.  
Perhaps when James et al were there, Slytherin was just a house for 
ambitious wizards like the sorting hat states in GOF.  It is also 
possible that they were not all in the same house.  We don't see HRH 
associating socially with many outside of their house, but they do 
some.  Percy is dating Penelope from Ravenclaw.  Harry has eyes on 
Cho, also from Ravenclaw.  Perhaps Pettigrew is from Hufflepuff, 
being that he isn't very brave, ambitious or a very good student, and 
the Maurders felt sorry for him.
