Ptolemy (aka Claudius Ptolemaeus, Ptolomaeus, Klaudios Ptolemaios, Ptolemeus) lived in Alexandria (in Egypt) from approx. 87 -150 AD. Very little is known about his personal life. He was an astronomer, mathemetician and geographer. He codified the Greek geocentric view of the universe, and rationalized the apparent motions of the planets as they were known in his time. He believed the planets and sun to orbit the Earth in the order Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn . This system became known as the Ptolemaic system.

Now me:

I, for one, had never heard of Nicholas Flamel and didn't realise that he was a real person.

Now me:

1. Dumbledore (the only wizard who Voldemort and his followers fear) has put 4 Privet Drive under protection so that Harry cannot be harmed. Harry is also protected (to a degree) at Hogwarts and is surrounded by people and articles that will come to his aid. Dumbledore also has alot of supporters within the community and is calling on them at the end of GoF to assist in the war against V.

2. At the moment we have a great portion of the wizarding world in denial. Even Fudge doesn't want to believe that Voldemort is on the rise (GoF)

So it isn't that they're sitting back doing *nothing* it's more to the point that they don't want to believe that anything is happening.
