This is a non-answer, but I think that line has to be
in there because it's funny.  She's waiting for
them...after she's dead...it's funny!  Oh well, I
thought so anyway.

Thank you!  Thank you!  I posted a plea to orienteers
*ages* ago (<--read with a Myrtle-ish whine) but no
one but me seemed to think this bit was very clumsily
written.  Maybe JKR has such a bad sense of direction
that she thinks a compass would actually be useful for
navigating a maze even without the accompanying
know-how.
