Alyssa:
>>In POA, in the chapter at the Three Broomsticks, Fudge(I think,
don't
have the book with me) mentions about one of Dumbledore's
spies "tipping him off" about James and Lily. Was this spy Snape?>>

Well, there's no cannon to prove this, but alot of listies *do* think
Snape was the spy. I think it's very likely Snape was the spy that
told Dumbeldore, but I'm not saying he *has* to be.

Alyssa:
>>If Snape was a DE, why didn't he
get punished for it?>>

Well, he could have. But I've always been of the opinion that Snape
dug himself into a hole, and that Dumbledore is the one that pulled
him out of it- possibly before it got public? Pity Harry couldn't
have stayed in the Penseive a bit longer and allow us a peak at what
Snape's trial was like. Well, if he had a trial. But as already
pointed out, if Snape had a trial, then why was Fudge just so darned
surprised? Hmm, maybe it was a private trial...? And I also agree
with Richelle in that Snape probably did something huge to prove to
Dumbledore that without a doubt, he was forsaking the Dark Side for
good.

Alyssa:
>>I don't believe the MoM would
have let him off just because of Dumbledore?>>

Well, Ludo Bagman sure had not trouble getting let off because he was
just such a good Beater....and Karkaroff just named a few names and
got off, didn't he? And don't forget about the MoM overlooking
Harry's incident with his Aunt Marge.

Alyssa:
>>He still was a DE and
must have done horrible things during the war for Voldemort. Was it
because he was giving them info about Voldemort's actions that they
decided to let him off for it?>>

Oh, that's very likely. As Karkaroff did, he could have given them
the information they needed for a Get Out of Azkaban Free Card.
Infact, part of the information he gave could have been the plot to
kill the Potters- saying that someone close to the Potters was
untrustworthy and under Voldemort's thumb. But I don't see that
little tidbit(especially since the Potters died anyways) as benig
enough to get him off scott free. I'm thinking that he was found out
as a DE, "saved" or something by Dumbledore, and then he played the
spy for the good side- and that that's probably when he passed that
tip on the Potters.
