I was trying to say that
>Harry has strange interactions will all manner of non-human magical
>creatures. Hagrid, Firenze, Dobby, the dementors. I think these are
>linked.

*I* think they probably know something the rest of us don't. Like Dumbledore, they take special interesting with everything Harry. (Omnipotent!Dumbledore?? How 'bout Omnipotent!Dobby?? It's not as absurd as it sounds, you know?)

Erasmus:
>Look at Goblet of Fire. No doubt Rowling was under a lot of pressure
>from the publishers to shorten the book. An obvious point is the
>whole thing with Hermione and the house-elves. There's a lot of pages
>there, and S.P.E.W. was not really necessary to the plot if you look
>at Goblet of Fire alone.

Which is why I feel that JKR is *not* going to leave it at "House Elves are different than humans and ACTUALLY need and enjoy their slavery" *looks pointedly at Grey Wolf* ^_~

She just put too much into S.P.E.W to just leave it at that, you know? I admit that Hermione may be taking the wrong approach, but I *do* believe that JKR intends to show us that the bushy haired girl is actually RIGHT. Like that never happens. ^_^

I agree with this...although I think there's probably another factor that we're both missing. The description of what Demetors actually fed on always seemed rather unclear in the books, IMO. If they feed solely on happiness, you'd think they'd hang around carnivals and beach resorts, wouldn't you? Not vile, depressing places. I *think* I'm with the school of thought that says the *difference* between the happiness and depression they cause in a person is what they feed on. It makes sense to me that people who react strongly (such as Harry) would be particularly appealing to them.

Corinth:
>Of course, none of this explains why they would want to kiss Harry. :)

Because he's just so darn cute, that's why ^_^. Personally, I feel that it's something to do with Harry's specialness (is that even a word?) and their desire to get rid of him as a threat to them. However, another theory would be that Harry *has* got an exceptional soul. Not only is he a good, brave person, but he can resist Imperious, which I think says his soul is very strong (my definition of "soul", based on the HP world, being your essence -- what makes you, you. Including your willpower).
