you? Not vile, depressing places. I *think* I'm with the school of
thought that says the *difference* between the happiness and
depression they cause in a person is what they feed on. It makes
sense to me that people who react strongly (such as Harry) would be
particularly appealing to them.

I've been thinking that maybe why the dementors live in dark, filthy,
depressing places is because they create them. Since they suck out
the happiness (or bring out depressing memories whichever theory you
like), the place that they were in would become rather horrible. Even
if they started out in a carnival (or such), it would eventually be
transformed into a vile place where the only thing you do is think
horrible thoughts. Sirius said that many prisoners in Azkaban lose
the will to eat, well then I guess people in contact with dementors
lose the will to do much of anything. This apathy would destroy any
community and turn it into the kind of place dementors are described
as inhabiting. I'm not sure I even believe this theory myself but I
think it makes some sense and I'm desperatly seeking for answers
concerning the whole dementor deal and none of the theories so far
have completely satisfied me. There seems to be a lot of uncertanty
concerning the dementors stemming from cannon. Maybe we will find out
more in later books.
