This is by far one of the most earth-shattering theories I've heard,
yet it strangely makes sense (although I do believe that many of
the posters here could convince me that my own mother was a
Death Eater)
Anyway, now that I think about it, there may be two more pieces
of highly circumstantial (and I stress those last two words)
evidence to hint at an evil McGonagall:
1) Dumbledore's suspension as Headmaster at Hogwarts. What
if Lucius Malfoy knew that McGonagall was a DE? That could
explain why he planted the diary on Ginny; hopefully, the CoS
would be opened, and he could then orchestrate Dumbledore's
suspension, putting McGonagall, a fellow evil-doer, in the
position of headmaster. What always struck me about Lucius
Malfoy is that he really doesn't seem to be the grovelling type,
which we saw in the graveyard scene. (Maybe this is what
contributes to the fall of Voldy; some of his own DEs mutiny, to
form another evil team) This could explain his actions with the
diary; a brilliant plot to see Hogwarts slowly to descend into evil,
following the lead of his evil cohort, Minerva.
2)The Chess Set; this always bothered me. How did Quirrell get
past it? In the book, there is no suggestion that the board has
already been played across (ie, no broken chess pieces etc),
and Hermione has no trouble getting back through it (wouldn't
you want to make it an obstacle either way?) Plus the emphasis
was really put on Ron's outstanding display of strategy. Of
course Voldy is smart, but how could he get through the powerful
McGonagall's master transfiguration with no sign of any
previous distrubance? Seems a little suss to me. . .
Anyway, another two wild pieces of evidence, that will not need
explaining if Minerva isn't evil, but will really amke you go "Whoa!
If it turns out to be part of the Evil!Minerva's denouement.
In other words, I'm kinda hedging my bets.
