It is common in most literature to use the imagery of Black and White
to represent good and evil respectively. However I have noticed that
in some places JKR has inverted this basic imagery letting Black be
good and White evil.

I first cam to this theory when re-reading PS/SS when the giant chess
match is taking place. Harry and co. plays as Black and the
opposition, the evil side, plays as white. Why would JKR swap the
symbolism, surely it could not just be to allow the transfigured
pieces to play first?

I began to search for other canon where Black represented the side of
good. First and most obvious is Sirius Black, Harry's godfather and
protector, whose animagi form is a black dog. Hagrid is described as
having "bushy black hair" and he also has black eyes. Which leads us
to another character description - Severus Snape. Snape wears black
robes and has black hair, eyes and it is clearly stated that
Dumbledore trusts he is on the side of good.

The most notable imagery of White being evil is Draco Malfoy.
The "pale faced boy with white blonde hair". Although possibly
redeemably latter on Draco is definitely on the side of evil now.
Another enemy of Harry's that is blond is Dudley. Voldemort has got
white skin and lets face it is very, very evil.

I am not quite sure where Remus Lupin fits in as he is described with
grey hair and dusty grey robes. Perhaps this will be explained when
we find out just why Sirius Black stopped trusting him. Another
little kink in the theory is the Hungarian Horntail which was black
but I can't really decide whether that was evil or not, Harry
certainly doesn't think so after the task.

However, I am aware of some planet-sized holes in my beautiful little
theory. Death Eaters where black, Hedwig (who has shown no signs of
being ever so evil) is a Snowy owl, Voldemort has, or rather had,
black hair and Dumbledores hair is white.

Add it all up and I am not sure what you get. Perhaps JKR has not
inverted the symbolism and Sirius and Hargrid will turn out to be
Ever So Evil and Draco and Dudley will be redeemed.

I have a feeling this theory is going to die slowly and horribly.
Ahh well, plenty more obscure theories where that came form.
