I like the patronus-equals-pure-happiness theory.  I think it 
withstands my theory that dementors need despair rather than 
happiness to survive.  Even if they were to remove all the happiness 
from the patronus, they would not find the conditions they were 
looking for.  It may be impossible for them to remove that much 
happiness without uncovering any despair as a result of their 
efforts, and therefore they cannot pass the patronus.
