Someone said (I think it was Pam, sorry I don't have
time to double check):
" I felt JKR was wrong when she said that there was
only one wizarding school in the UK and Ireland and
lots of people think she's wrong when she says there
are about a 1000 pupils at Hogwarts. She certainly
implied that there weren't any schools in Europe - so
perhaps she's wrong about that too!"
I say:
Okay, this is something I've seen repeatedly here and
elsewhere and it has begun to bug me so much I need to
rant for a sec-- JKR is *not wrong*!! I am as rabid an
HP fan as you will find anywhere, but I think we've
all lost sight of the fact that this is a *made-up*
world, so the person who makes it up can't be wrong
about details that only exist in her mind.
I am the first one to admit that some things don't
make as much sense as we'd like them to, such as the
number of students at Hogwarts not adding up
correctly, or the fact that an entire country should
probably have more than one school, but that doesn't
make JKR wrong. It means that either she didn't think
them through properly (which is surprising, as well
put together as her stories are) or that these details
will be of some significance later.
I write lots of stories, and frankly, I would be very
annoyed if someone said that I was wrong about
something that I made up in the first place.
All right, I'm going to stop here and apologize in
advance for sounding cranky about this. I just think
that we can't question the authority of the person who
knows Harry Potter's world better than anybody.
Heather, who feels a lot better now :)
