Keep in mind we only have Riddle's word for whether or not they look alike.
James and Harry yes, everybody in the wizard world seems to recognize that,
but surely if Riddle and James looked that much alike someone would let it
slip. Harry didn't seem to notice it when he was with Riddle, only Riddle
pointed it out. Now I'm not entirely sure how the diary works, but if the
Riddle in the diary also knew the future events and if it's true that Harry
is his grandson, he may have been hinting at it, even if it was through Lily
and they didn't look alike. JKR never mentions what color eyes Riddle has
(correct me if I'm wrong), but I'm betting they're green.

Dark red hair could = Gryffindor, sure. But green eyes could also =
Slytherin.

I can find connections for Lily to be both Gryffindor and Slyltherin. But I
can't find anything that would make James Slytherin. And we know for
certain he was in Gryffindor.
One thing I found interesting, when Harry was being sorted, the Sorting Hat
says "Not Slytherin, eh? Are you sure? You could be great, you know, it's
all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness,
no doubt about that--no? Well, if you're sure--better be GRYFFINDOR!"
The Sorting Hat seemed like it had made up its mind (or whatever it has) to
put Harry in Slytherin. It didn't say "Slytherin could help you on the way
to greatness", but "Slytherin *will* help you on the way to greatness."
Something about Harry made it rethink the decision. You've got to admit,
Harry fits with the Sorting Hat's description of Slytherins as "Cunning folk
who use any means to achieve their ends." Sneaking around in an
invisibility cloak, for example.
