Dumbledore would have only told them what he thought
was neccesary for them to know. He would not want
them to tell Harry that he was the hero to the
wizarding world, he sent Harry there so he would not
know. I'm sure there would have been wizarding
families that would have welcomed baby Harry into
there homes, but he would not have had a normal wizard
childhood, people would have always treated him
special and let him get away with almost anything he
would want. Dumbledore was right to send him to the
Dursley's for that reason, it may not have been the
best thing for harry, but it was one of the best
options.
Life with the Dursley's helped to strengthen his
character, yes he could have turned out differently,
he could have been socially inept, but he wasn't. The
Dursley's did kind of beat some good manners into him,
he wasn't able to talk or fight back to authority and
get away with it. So even if he may not have been the
most outgoing first year on Hogwarts I don't believe
he would have mean or rude to the other children. He
was alone, scared and facing the unknown. He could
have lashed out but at who, he didn't know any of
these people, and these weren't people who were being
mean to him. His first taste of the wizarding world
was meeting Hagrid, and he was very nice, he brought
Harry his first birthday cake, and offered a way for
him to get away from the Dursley's. The whole world
wasn't against Harry just the Dursley's and he was
leaving them, something he had dreamed about. I don't
think Harry could have turned out any differently
being brought up by the Dursley's. He didn't want to
be like them, rude, mean, uncaring people that they
were. He would have wanted to grow up to be different
then they were. Harry grew to basically be the
opposite of the Dursley's. I think he would have had
more of a Malfoy personality if he grew up with a
wizarding family, he would have been praised all his
life for something he really had no hand in, his
mother was the one that saved him. I belive that
Dumbledor did the right thing by leaving him with the
Dursley's, that doesn't mean that I like them, no no
no, but he was doing the best he could for Harry with
the resources available to him. I still hate the
Dursley's and I do believe they should have been nicer
to Harry, it wasn't his choice to live there after
all.
