Well, the theories floating about are legion...I'm rather fond of the one 
that has Harry being both the heir of Gryffindor *and* now the heir of 
Slytherin, and my natural forward extension of that thought would be 
essentially having to choose which legacy is going to triumph.

That would reflect back to the Sorting Hat waffling - although almost in a 
sadistically playful sense - over which house to put Harry in from the 
start.

Another point: although that is what Dumbledore articulates, a lot of the 
heroic efforts that Harry has undertaken so far have elements of fate about 
them, or at least were not accomplished alone - in some cases they smack not 
so much of his choice as blind luck.

A single articulated philosophy which has limited application (in the sense 
that we can't choose whether that out of control semi driver is going to 
swerve into us or not) is not going to be the sole motivation behind every 
occurrence in an epic of this magnitude.
