Would it be possible too, to assume that perhaps girls might learn something
from the male characters, and vice versa? I know when I was a young reader,
I didn't only identify with the girl characters. Both the male and female
characters in the Harry Potter books have UNIVERSAL qualities, and that's
why I don't think it matters how many of each there are.

Bravo and bravo and bravo again. Thank you for the voice of reason. As a
young reader, I looked for good stories, characters whose personalities
resonated with mine, situations that involved me--it was totally irrelevant
what gender they were. I have been more than a little bemused by this
gender-validation-as-function-of-effectiveness-or-percentage thing before,
and doubtless will be again, so I wanted to celebrate at least one person on
the list saying what sounds like solid story sense and not a page from a
"How to Make Your New Novel More Socially Acceptable" pamphlet.
