Two ideas-- In this theory, Snape seems more like Dumbledore's
research assistant than partner. You know, the kid who gets to do the
grunt work while the person heading up the project gets the credit?
While other teachers refer to Dumbledore by name, first or last, I
can't think of any instance where Snape calls Dumbledore by anything
except his title "Headmaster." Plus, he acts as though students are
beneath him and take up far too much of his time. Side note: If he is
being extra nice to Malfoy and pulling strings to keep Crabbe and
Goyle enrolled in Hogwarts, I bet it ain't for free.

Second idea (that's undoubtedly been touched on before)-- Dumbledore
might be keeping his friends close and his enemies even closer.
Snape's switching loyalties between two older, more powerful wizards
may mean he's learning everything he can from them while waiting for
them to kill each other off. Voldemort seems pretty handy at potions
(GoF) as well, so Snape was probably his research assistant first.

Poor Snape... No self-esteem. No sense of humor. Badly in need a large
mug of hot cocoa and a hug.

Using this theory, can we assume that all teachers who have double
periods (Hagrid, Snape and Sprout) are researchers? We know that
Hagrid was experimenting with magical creatures (and treating his
students as research assistants), can we therefore assume Sprout is a
research professor as well?

Frankie, an ex-research assistant.
