I always assumed that Snape WAS working at Hogwarts at that time, in
a similar role to what he may be playing in the future. I thought of
him as a double (triple?) agent - making Voldemort think he was
spying for him at Hogwarts, while actually being in league with
Dumbledore. The flaw in this idea is that, if he were at Hogwarts
all that time, he would have had far less time to be getting info
from Voldemort, like about how they were targetting the Potters. I
am not hooked on the idea of a potion that was concocted involving
Lily's sacrifice (I can't believe they were making something they
knew would involve her dying), I just like the idea that Snape's roll
at Hogwarts (in the past or the present) is to use his potion-making
skills for research. Because, otherwise, why would he be there?
Just because Dumbledore trusts him doesn't mean he would keep him on
as an obviously sadistic teacher who shows hatred towards most of his
students. There's got to be another reason, and that's why I like
the research idea.
