My theory is that, yes, Snape was a Death Eater. Perhaps he was one who
tried to pull free because he had enough conscience not to want to go past a
certain point with whatever Voldemort was doing, and he got out - but now
he's not safe anywhere except at Hogwarts, under Dumbledore's eye and
protection.

I think you're right, he doesn't especially want to be teaching. I doubt
that's the career he set out to pursue.

I think that, given his attitude and the manner in which he often turns up
at Dumbledore's right hand, that he's a gifted wizard who strayed to the
dark side, as it were, and then fought his way back - but for one thing,
Voldemort or his followers might be seeking a way to harm him or do him in
for having betrayed them, and for another, I suspect he is vulnerable with
the death mark on him - something burned its way into his soul during the
time he was a Death Eater. Maybe it's not even so much that he can't be
trusted - although I'm sure there would be those in the wizarding world who
would feel that way - out among them all as that he can't trust himself, and
that he is in fact in danger unless he is with Dumbledore and at Hogwarts.

I rather like the theory that his function there is to infiltrate Slytherin,
gain the confidence of the house, and be on the alert for ill doings among
the suspect families of the students with former Death Eater parents.
