Certainly, you are entitled to your opinion, but I still say Hagrid is
in the process of figuring it out.

He is very uneducated with respect to formal education. He knows his
subject because, for a vast majority of his life, the only friends
he's had are his friends in the forest.

I think he has demonstrated that he can teach this class (re:
unicorns), but I really don't think he has a clear understanding of
what he is suppose to do and what it means to be a teacher. To him
animals are an adventure, and that is what he is trying to give his
students. So the hypogrif thing turned into a disaster, but that was
Malfoy's fault. After that, he just wanted to get through it. Just get
to the end of the year and be done with it. Then he gave it some
thought and decide he would create a project for the students; they
would all get to raise a blast-ended skrewt. Great idea, thinking like
a teacher but poor execution.

I think at some point Hagrid is going to become hopelessly discouraged
at being the Care of Magical Creatures teacher, and he's going to be
ready to give up. Then Harry or Ron or Hermione or some combination of
them will lay it out in simple terms that he can understand. They will
explain to him what his job is. They will tell him that he is full of
knowledge about all kinds of magical creature, and all he has to do is
give that knowledge to his students. Right now, in a sense, he wants
to give them the creatures, but he will eventually understand that his
job is to give them knowledge.

I don't think Hagrid is incapable of doing the job, but as an
uneducated, and from a formal perspective, an inexperienced man, he
doesn't have a clue what it means to be a teacher.

I think in the next book, we will see him pull it together
significantly and by the last book, his class will be very popular and
successful.
