Well, yes, I suppose the ski example wasn't the best comparison.  I
always got the impression that Harry's broom more or less fell into
the Whomping Willow, not directly down, but continuing its path like
any moving projectile, wizard made or muggle made, would.  It didn't
fly on its own.  It fell, with style :)
