I must say this is a creative spin.  Hagrid missed at
least two lessons, for starters (maybe more, but AFAWK
Care of Magical Creatures only meets once a week in
GF):

For another thing, he didn't exactly just take a
couple of days off to blow off steam and get his head
together.  He showed every intention of quitting,
except that Dumbledore wouldn't accept his
resignation.

What I do see is that he really shaped up after that. 
He picked up on the unicorns lesson and improved it,
and continued in the cute fluffy beast vein even
though it isn't his personal preference.  Of course,
Nifflers do wreck houses, so that's one point in their
favor, even if they are terribly cuddly and lacking in
ferocity.
