Tim notes, that Draco says at the end of GOF,
' "You've picked the losing side, Potter! I
warned you! I told you you ought to choose your company more
carefully, remember? When we met on the train, first day at
Hogwarts? I told you not to hang around with riffraff like this!
Too late now, Potter! They'll be the first to go, now the Dark
Lord's back! Mudbloods and Muggle-lovers first! Well -- second --
Diggory was the f --"... That certainly doesn't sound like someone
who's going to be on the side of Harry and Dumbledore.'
This reminds me. How can Draco invite/expect Harry to be on the side
of those responsible for his parents' deaths?! But Draco sounded
bored and insincere when he first met Harry and said 'oh, sorry' that
Harry's parents were dead, even though he didn't realize who was who
at the time. If Draco just cares about being on the winning side
because this is how he was raised, it would either not occur to him
or not be relevant enough that Harry would want to be loyal to the
parents he doesn't much remember instead of concerned with whether
he, Harry, is on the winning side in life now. What a shallow
spiritual/emotional life for Draco. Could he learn to feel or show
relevant emotion even with his parents involved in dangerous business
in future books? He does turn red and defend his mother in GOF...
but so far his 'friendships' have been as shallow as his learned
values.
I hope he doesn't get to do some serious, deadly dark magic to kind
characters as the dark/light battle heats up.
A note on:
David P. said,
"And I believe book 7 will have a fallen hero (a difference between
British and American literature); it would not surprise me in the
least for the final chapter to end with Ron and Hermione gazing into
the Mirror of Erised, joined by their fallen friend, the boy with the
lightning bolt scar."
Yes, perhaps Harry will die-- but as for the last element, hopefully
not exactly like that-- didn't JKR conceive of the very ending from
the beginning, and put in the mirror of Erised in memory of her
mother who died? Not sure of the timeline but perhaps the mirror
wasn't conceived of yet. Good point though-- I do not disbelieve
Harry's mortality...
