Fine, it didn't work for you, and I'm sorry about that, but it worked
for Neville, didn't it? They aren't putting leg-locker curses on him
in broad daylight any longer, are they? Yeah, they hide behind
Snape's robes as he chooses to act like an oversized eight-year-old,
but they aren't doing it themselves.
The tried-and-true way of dealing with a bully is to slap the bully
back. Perhaps it's not 100 percent effective, but the majority of the
time, it works.

Richelle, in a later post, took this to mean not confirmed nor denied
that James was in Gryffindor.
To me, this is like asking, "What position did Michael Jordan play
for the Bulls?" and then when the responder answers: "shooting
guard", questioning whether Jordan played for the Bulls.
The question specifically mentions Gryffindor. Of course, we could
argue that JKR wasn't really paying attention, and only
heard "Quidditch" but for now, James is in Gryffindor.
I think until further evidence presents itself that JKR could have
been playing a verbal shell game, we have to take this to mean James
was in Gryffindor. As I said before, this strongly suggests to me
that the other Marauders -- at least Lupin and Black -- were as well.
