I'm not so sure we can assume that.  After all, just the other day,
Eric Clapton's song was heard in my own living room, yet Mr. Clapton,
unfortunately, was nowhere in sight.

I'm leaning more toward the assumption that a Phoenix feather retains
some part of the Phoenix's magical essence, and during Priori
Incantatem that essence manifested itself in the form of song.
