Well, personally I think it has something to do with his past DE status, and
his possible wizard "probation" perhaps being the reason he is at Hogwarts
at all.  Let's face it, he's not the happiest guy on the block.  I mean, I'm
a teacher and I teach because I love it, not because I can torment children.
Anyway, I think that Dumbledore, just to be safe, wants Snape to have as
little exposure to the dark arts as possible, just in case he gets too much
of a taste for it again.   This is all entirely hypothetical and I could be
wrong.  I'd be interested in hearing what others think of this as well.
