I don't think Snape really wants the DADA job. I think it is just a
rumor the kids have started because of his dislike of all the recent
teachers. This dislike, however, has proven to be well founded.
Starting with Quirrell, Snape suspected he might try for the stone
and disliked him because of it, Lockhart was an idoit and a fraud and
Snape knew it, Lupin, well, an attempt on one's life might cause one
to be a little bitter and his history with Moody also justifies the
hatered.
If we go on the assumption that Snape is helping Dumbledore with an
important potion, why would he want to go into the DADA? More fame
and glory will be had with this potion. If he is not working on the
potion, he is good at potion making and that offers much satisfation
I would think.
