I was doing some thinking yesterday, trying to hypothesize the number of classes at Hogwarts. There are 7 different levels of students, and four houses. Two houses have classes together in all classes, so that means 2 classes for each level of students. Assuming all students are at some point in class simultaneously, there must be 14 classes total. However, perhaps one or two classes have a free period at each time, which could leave us with 12 or 13 classes. I'm listing class, teacher, and if it's required or an elective. Let's see how this goes (in no particular order):

1. Transfiguration--McGonagall--required
2. Potions--Snape--required
3. Charms--Flitwick--required
4. Herbology--Sprout--required
5. History of Magic--Binns (ghost)--required
6. Defense Against the Dark Arts--Quirrell/Lockhart/Lupin/Moody/?--required
7. Muggle Studies--?--elective
8. Divination--Trelawney--elective
9. Arithmancy--?--elective
10. Magical Creatures--Hagrid--?? (can't remember. I know it isn't until 3rd year, but is is required then?)
11. Flying--Hooch--??
12. the Study of Ancient Runes--??--elective

Now, Magical Creatures only meets once or twice a week, right? What about Herbology? There's got to be more than And is Flying really a class? Is it continued after the first year? after the first week? Is it "P.E.?" It would be reasonable to assume that Harry hasn't got to take flying if he's on the Quidditch team, which could be why we don't know much about it. Still, there've got to be more than 5 or 6 elective classes. What about higher level students? Do they perhaps have options we don't know of? I'm missing some teachers in there, I'm sure I could find most of them if I tried hard enough, but no time right now. Any input would be appreciated!
