with Voldy? For all the rest of the world knew, Barty Jr. was dead, and
buried on the island on which Azkaban lays. <<<<<<<<<
At the end of GoF, when Crouch Jr. is given Veritaserum, he explains
that Bertha "discovered" him living at his father's home... hence the
memory spell on her to keep her from spilling the beans. Voldemort
undid the memory charm, and Bertha told him everything. Even if you
assume that Bertha, like many in the WW, was sympathetic to Crouch Jr.
and *didn't* think he was a real DE, Voldemort obviously would have
known the truth. I'm not sure if she actually told Voldemort that Barty
was looking to come in contact with Voldemort, his actual words make
sense even if he came to that conclusion on his own. *She* told him
that one of his death eaters had escaped Azkaban, and *he* knew that he
was faithful and would jump at the chance to help resurrect Voldie.
