Not sure how relevant this is but Dumbledore is a member of both-
* International Confederation of Wizards (SS4, GF17)
* International Federation of Warlocks (PA3)
There is somewhere in one of the books where Dumbledore's titles are
listed; Order of Merlin-First class, etc..., and it mentions these two
international organizations. I tried looking for it, but I can't find
it. I'm not sure what book to look in.
So it would seem that being a Warlock and a Wizards are not mutually
exclusive. This seems to support what other people said, that a
warlock specializes more in witchcraft, and a wizard specializes in
sorcery.
By definition, the term Warlock seems to be the most inclusive-
** wiz·ard n. 1. One who practices magic; a sorcerer or magician.
** war·lock n. A male witch, sorcerer, wizard, or demon.
(American Heritage Dictionary)
Also-
** hag n. 1. An old woman considered ugly or frightful. 2.a. A witch;
a sorceress. b. Obsolete. A female demon.
Apparently the key to being a Hag is being incredibly ugly. Since a
Hag is also associated with a demon, I would guess that any really
ugly old witch with a nasty disposition would be considered a Hag. So,
age, appearance, and disposition are the keys to a Hag.
There would also seem to be some implication that Warlock do not have
the most pleasant disposition.
Formal definitions don't always reflect how words are used. Languages
tend to be very dynamic; always changing.
