The Moderator Team has revised the TBAY portion of our prefixing
policy to clarify which posts to the main list ought to carry the
TBAY prefix and how the content guidelines should be applied to TBAY
posts. For the benefit of our newer members, we set forth the
revised TBAY prefixing with the previously-announced content
guidelines:

*** USAGE OF THE TBAY PREFIX

Theory Bay (TBAY) is a presentation style for canon-based posts using
fictionalized elements or discussing particular enumerated canon
theories. All TBAY posts, like all other posts to the main list,
must comply with our content guidelines and must make a canon point.
Your post *must* carry the TBAY prefix if it fits within either of
the following descriptions:

(1) Your post dramatizes the author or another person (either real or
fictional) inhabiting a fictional space such as Theory Bay, regardless
of the subject matter of the post or the theories being discussed;

OR

(2) Understanding your post requires that the reader already have a
base familiarity with terminology or theory outlined in Hypothetic
Alley at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/files/Admin%
20Files/hypotheticalley.htm

To clarify Point 2, a post written in a purely narrative or essay
style that *does not* assume prior familiarity with one of the
Hypothetic Alley entries *need not* carry the TBAY prefix. Only if
the post assumes this background on the part of the reader must it
carry the prefix. The theories and metaphors so far developed in TBAY
posts have been collected and summarized in the Hypothetic Alley file.

EXAMPLES:

Your post describes a fictional encounter with another list member set
in a bar in which you argue about which HP characters will die - TBAY
prefix required.

Your post is an essay designed to persuade others of the merits of
SECONDFLAMINGO - TBAY prefix required.

Your post is an essay arguing that Snape is a veela - No TBAY prefix
required.

Your post is an essay making an enthusiastic, colorful argument that
Lupin is really a Lethifold and coining an elaborate acronym for this
theory - No TBAY prefix required.

***GENERAL CONTENT GUIDELINES FOR ALL POSTS

All posts to the main list should comply with the following Content
Guidelines, regardless of topic:

(a) Posts to the main group should relate clearly to The Canon (the
works or words of JKR). It is permissible to include discrete OT
content, role-playing, vignettes, pastiche or fanfic references,
subject to the prefixing rules set forth in the Humongous BigFile
(our list rules) at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/files/Admin%
20Files/hbfile.html

(b) Writers should indicate clearly when they are expressing their own
opinions or ideas, as opposed to addressing factual points from The
Canon.

(c) Writers may assume that readers are familiar with the HPfGU
glossary of acronyms see Humongous Bigfile:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/files/Admin%
20Files/hbfile.html

but should explain any acronyms that are not in the glossary. Readers
should be familiar with the list of terms outlined in the HBF.

(d) When responding to a post or ongoing thread, writers should
provide appropriate referencing by (1) citing the relevant author(s)
and (2) quoting relevant portion(s) of the prior message(s). Quoted
text that is not relevant for context should be removed.
