 I think that the silvery thing is some sort of calling charm. The 
way the sentance is structured makes it confusing. I don't have the 
book in front of me, but I'm pretty sure that a few minutes after 
the silvery thing, Hagrid shows up. So I think that the silvery 
thing was a way of summoning Hagrid. 

I also saw this somewhere, but I can't remember where. It may have 
been the Lexicon. Yes, I've found it! It's called a Messenger Spell.
