dicentra63:
The way Dumbledore acts immediately following the failed execution, it
seems as if he knows that Harry and Hermione have freed Buckbeak:
Me:
It truly seems as though Dumbledore knows Buckbeak had help from someone.
<snip most the canon, don't we all have it memorized anyway?>
"Macnair, if Buckbeak has indeed been stolen, do you really think the
theif will have lead him away on foot?" said Dumbledore, still
sounding amused. "Search the skies, if you will...."
dicentra63 again:
So does Dumbledore know that Harry and Hermione are in the forest with
Buckbeak? Is he trying to stop Macnair from finding them? This might
be Harry and Hermione's second trip through this time frame, but it's
Dumbledore's first. I suppose he could have guessed they let Buckbeak
go without knowing they were travelling in time.
But then he must have found out (or figured out) that they didn't save
Buckbeak during their first trip through that time frame, so that's
why he gives them the clue.
Me:
He does seem to be discouraging Macnair from looking for Buckbeak. I don't
know how he would know that Buckbeak was hiding nearby with H&H or if he
just knew it was an option. He never ever discussed with H&H how Buckbeak
would be saved, just gave them enough of a hint to figure it out for
themselves.
Maybe Dumbledore did some time traveling on his own. Even though it seems
that he was on his first and only trip through the execution time frame,
maybe he had already been there, done that, and therefore was able to help
out a little bit. I just don't see how he would know that H&H were hiding
there otherwise (unless he can see through trees, hum, that's another theory
that works, but I just thought it up and haven't pondered it yet)
On a separate issue, I see no evidence that he knew that the dementors would
attack and Harry would scare them off with the Patronus. So he didn't know
that Harry would save more than two innocent lives, that is why he only
hinted that they would save two innocent lives. I don't think Dumbly is
omniscient but I do think he is quite powerful and quite likely able to time
travel.
dicentra63 again with what must be a joke:
OR!
The first time through that time frame, Buckbeak *is* executed, which
is why Dumbledore suggests that they save him when they go back. So
when Harry and Hermione see Dumbledore and his amused demeanor, is he
aware of the fact that H&H have changed events? Does he know in that
moment that his future self sent them back in time?
Sure, go ahead and think about it. Tie your brain in knots, I dare you.
--Dicey, whose brain is too small to tie into a knot
And me for the last time:
I don't know - this never really messed up my brain. The pieces from the
two time frames mesh so well that I found it clear the first time. The only
thing that made me wonder was how Dumbledore seemed to have it all figured
out when he was at Hagrid's to witness the execution.
So no knots for me, but didn't someone in another thread allude to Maxwell,
dels, and curls? Talk about tying a brain in knots.
