I'm new and haven't gotten through all the archives
yet to know if
this issue has been raised, but my question is -

Why did Sirius stay in Azkhaban those 12 years if he
could transform
into a dog and escape, apparently easily, at any time?

He knew that Peter was alive and would have been
motivated to clear
himself and find Harry, who, as his godchild, he had
an obligation to
take care of.

The only possible reason I could think was to keep the
Death Eaters
from leaving the island to search for him and create
havoc in the WW.
Any other ideas?

I think he couldn't have fit through the bars at
first, and by the time he lost enough weight to do it,
the "Azkaban syndrome" kicked in.

"Azkaban syndrome"-My theory for it is that being in
Azkaban saps out any mental concentration, or
strength, or even coherency so he simply couldn't
think of it (too caught up in horrible thoughts), and
couldn't have managed it if he tried. People go insane
there, and even though he didn't, I doubt he was too
far off. But once he found about Peter's proximity to
Harry, it gave him a purpose (I think he calls it "an
obsession" at some point), and that enabled him to
concentrate and clear his head sufficiently to
espcape.

I think also, a part of him would feel that he
deserved to be in Azkaban, since he would feel it was
his fault J&L died. And the environment would foster
that kind of thought. He still thinks its his fault in
the Shrieking Shack. That's over 13 years later, but
I'd imagine Azkaban doesn't allow for either mental
growth or a healthy grieving process. Instead it
forces him to dwell on it. Thus, he'd escape to save
Harry's life but not his own (of course, out of
Azkaban he comes to his senses somewhat). Now, I don't
think it's a big part of his reasoning, but I am sure
it's there somewhere.

Marsha,
who is thinking about Azkaban and is now very
surprised Sirius is sane.
