scar = alarm bell?

I received the following query in my Lexicon mail:

   My question refers to a possible difference between
   the UK and US versions of GofF. In the scene very
   near the end where Dumbledore is trying to convince
   Fudge that V. is back, Fudge says "I"ve never heard
   of a curse scar acting as an alarm bell before".
   It has been raised, on the HPGalleries forum, that
   the UK version omits the word "never", which changes
   the whole meaning drastically.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is there a difference at this
point in the books between the US and UK versions? My US edition
does say "never."
