In the beginning of SS, Dumbledore says he's leaving Harry with the Dursleys 
because he doesn't want Harry to grow up knowing that he's The Boy Who Lived 
and with all that fame with could "turn anyone's head..."

So, in essence, he was saving Harry from the fickle finger of fame.
