Yes, but doesn't that strike you as a little...weak?  I mean, subjecting a child to that kind of emotional deprivation and well, torture?  Just so he won't get a big head?  Lots of kids in Harry's position would have turned out awful -- antisocial, cruel, unable to connect with other human beings.  It seems alot to risk for such an insignificant reason.
