I'm not quite sure that I agree with this.  I think this was the end 
of another school year when he was expelled, and I think the former 
headmaster probably quit then (or may have been asked to leave by the 
board, not sure there), and Dumbledore became headmaster.  Therefore 
I think what would have been the *4th* year for Hagrid was his first 
year as Gamekeeper.

SS/PS p 59:

ter tell yeh the truth.  In me third year.  They snapped me wand in 
half an' everything.  But Dumbledore let me stay on as gamekeeper.

That little quote seems to me to mean *stay on* as in, no going to 
find a new home because daddy is dead and he has no home, Hogwarts 
became his home.  He's expelled, yet stays.  So I'm leaning towards 
end of school year here . . .
