OK, here it is as promised: PoA, US paperback edition, pg 357:

Lupin: "We [Snape and the Marauders] were in the same year, you 
know, and we -- er -- didn't like each other very much.  He 
especially disliked James."

Admittedly, this may not be gospel.  But Lupin is not stupid, and 
has no reason to lie about such a minor point, and Snape's hostility 
to James is repeatedly demonstrated throughout the books, so I'm 
willing to accept Lupin's statement as true unless shown otherwise.
