now me:

I have no doubt that Dumbledore never intended for Cedric to die (but 
then again, I had no doubt that Scabbers was anything but a rat until 
the end of PoA...).  Assuming I'm right this time, though, what 
troubles me is why Dumbledore would allow the third task to proceed 
at *night* within a *20 foot high hedge*, where no one could see what 
was going on inside and prevent horrible things from happening.  
Especially since Dumbledore was "reading the signs" regarding 
Voldemort's attempts to regain power.

(I also wonder about the point of having everyone sitting in the 
stands surrounding the maze when they couldn't see what was going on 
inside it...)
