Actually, it was the combined force of Harry, Ron and Hermione all 
casting Expelliarmus at exactly the same moment that knocked out 
Snape.  We don't know what Harry's spell alone would've done.

And earlier in the book, Snape's solo Expelliarmus knocked Lockhart 
across the room, so it's not unknown for that spell to have a 
violent effect.  It seems to depend on some combination of the 
caster's power and intent. (Sirius and Remus are both powerful 
wizards, but they disarm the Trio without causing any violent side-
effects, so presumably they were both careful to control their 
Expelliarmus.)
