Could it be because Snape's hair is naturally wavy or curly, and that he
intends on keeping long and greasy so that it falls straight? I can
imagine him as a child with short curls all over his head, and becoming
a teenager he let it grow long so that the "girlish" curls became simple
waves, then he discovered that grease made it look even less
"Lockhart-ish"...
