Snape says something like this: "You should be thanking me on bended 
knee, Potter.  If I hadn't come along now, you would have died just 
like your father: too arrogant to believe that Sirius had betrayed 
you!"

That certainly sounds like Snape tried to convince James that Sirius 
was a spy, and that James refused to listen.
