I'm glad someone has brought up this point! They should look like 
young elephants by the time they leave Hogwarts. From what I have 
heard of boarding school food, it's pretty awful. My guess is that 
this is the equivalent of Enid Blyton's "midnight feasts". (Well, the 
Gryffindor common-room parties certainly are, anyway). The author is 
writing a fantasy and children reading it think, "Ooh, wouldn't it be 
nice to go to school *there* Sue B
